Kansas City Central Library Roofmeadow® Type III: Savannah and Irrigation: Base-level capillary and trickle irrigation Size: 4,000 sf green roof and 7,500 sf pavers Client: Kansas City Public Library Location: Kansas City , MO Landscape Architect: Conservation Design Forum Roofscapes, Inc. Installer: Lichtenfels Nurseries Status: Completed Spring 2004 Distinguishing Features The new green-roofed public access plaza atop the classical Central Library is a key element in the downtown revitalization of Kansas City, MO. Engineered by Roofscapes, Inc., and installed by Lichtenfels Nurseries on the 5th-floor roof, the mixed-use plaza integrates pedestal pavers with a complex green roof that features a range of native plant environments. Plant zones range from Type III: Savannah wetland to prairie to Type IV: Meadow 1 tree-bearing upland grasses, with profile depths ranging from 8 to 16 inches. The green roof is sustained by a complex irrigation system that combines drip capillary irrigation with base-level irrigation, based on the requirements of the planting environments. Light is admitted to the building through triangular skylights and green glass walk-on pavers, and plantings surround and integrate these features. The plaza provides an attractive environment for many activities, from individual reading on the benches provided, to concerts and other large gatherings for a rejuvenated city.
