Mallets Creek District Library

Roofmeadow ®Type II: Aromatic Garden

Irrigation: None

Size: 13,000 square feet

Client: Ann Arbor Public LIbrary

Location: Ann Arbor, MI

Roofscapes Contractor: Greenroofs/north america

Architect: Luckenbach/Ziegelman Architects

Status: Completed in 2003

Distinguishing Features:

The Mallets Creek Branch Library is a striking building dominated by four copper-clad skylights. The peaked roof slopes at between 2:12 (9.5 degrees, or 16.7 percent) and 2.5:12 (11.8 degrees, or 21 percent) away from the skylights. A 2.5-inch thick Type II: Aromatic Garden assembly was installed. The maximum wet weight of this system is 15 pounds per square foot.

Blower trucks, used to place the media, proved very useful due to challenges resulting from limited access to portions of the roof and the steep roof pitches. The cover of Sedum plants was established from 72-cell plugs. A photo-degradable wind blanket was used to protect the lightweight media from wind damage over the winter months. The roof can be seen from Eisenhower Parkway.
