The Calhoun School Roofmeadow® Type II: Aromatic Garden and
Irrigation: Base-level water Size: 2,500 square feet Client: Calhoun School Location: New York, NY Architect: Fox and Fowle Roofscapes, Inc. Installer: Town & Garden Status: Completed Fall 2004
Distinguishing Features
Nine floors above the busy Manhattan streets, Roofscapes, Inc. designed and installed an exciting new mixed-use playground and meeting area for school functions. The complex project included rubber pavers, garden boxes (see above), a deep, turf-covered play area, and a wild meadow zone to support the science curriculum. The entire area is undergirded by a sheet drain that allows rainwater to flow freely throughout the system to the internal drains.
A challenging retrofit, a specialized ultra-light growth media was created to accommodate the stringent dead load restrictions. Timing of the job required staging of the green roof materials using the internal service elevator, and thus careful coordination of all aspects of construction.
