Distinguishing Features

Roofscapes, Inc. was retained by SWA Group to develop a light-weight vegetated roof cover system that would be suitable for application in Southern California. Relying, in part, on the experience of Optigrün International AG with similar installations in southern Italy, Roofscapes, Inc. prepared specifications for the green roof. The installation is designed to:

  • Provide a stable growing environment for the plant community;
  • Maximize the efficient us of water resources; and
  • Accommodate and control runoff from rainfall events.

The landscape designed by SWA Group repeats the key visual patterns that are part of the ground-level landscape. Furthermore, the design divides the roof into zones that are optimized for spring, summer, or winter viewing. The plant selection is dominated by Sedum, Echeveria, Lampranthus, and Delosperma, with accents provided by Agave and Aloe, among others.

The resulting Type IV: Meadow 1 cover system will weigh no more than 35 pounds per square foot when fully saturated. Irrigation is accomplished via a ‘base-level’ system that utilizes recycled water.
